Tips and Tricks

To create an account: Go to SecondLife.com, click on 'Sign Up', go through the steps, download the viewer, open it and login.

Username: Note that the name you choose, though it can be changed, will always appear as a legacy name on your account.

Inventory: Suitcase in the left-hand side of the viewer, when clicked, there are three tabs: 'My Inventory' (everything), 'Recent' (generally useless), and 'Worn'.  To search through one of them, have the tab you want to look through activated and type what you're looking for in the search bar.  Then, to put something on, right-click and click 'wear'.

To bookmark: Go to your top bar on the viewer, then World -> Landmark this place.

Double-click to run, or hit Ctrl-R to set yourself to always run

Sit down: Alt+Ctrl+S.

Alt+Arrow button lets you zoom in and out, and while you’re sitting, the left and right arrows spin around your avatar.  

Join groups as you're offered (a pop-up screen) for the activities you're interested in, as the conversations in the chat groups can prove very informative.

Activating groups:  Hit the 'People' tab on the bottom of the viewer, select the ‘Groups’ tab and activate the group you need.

To wear items: Go to your inventory, search for the item you want, right click, select ‘Wear’

To detach items; Goto your inventory, right click, select ‘Detach.’

To delete items: Go to your inventory, right click, select ‘Delete’

To make a purchase from something with multiple possible items: left click on the SL object, select the item you want. Right click on the object and click ‘Pay’ from the dropdown menu.

To give someone money, to put money into a tip jar, to purchase items: Left click if hovering results in a L$ symbol.  Right click otherwise and click 'Pay' from the dropdown menu.

Lag: If you're in an area that's heavily populated, there's a chance that you're going to have to deal with lag.  If so, one of the things you can do to help with it is go to Me (top bar) --> Preferences --> Avatar Maximum Complexity (lowest).  It'll turn pretty much everyone around into differently colored blobs, but it'll help a little bit with dealing with the lag.
