Second Life Beginnings
First I should note that I didn't start writing down anything until I was about three weeks in.
To begin: Just go to SecondLife.com and create an account. It's pretty simple - click on 'Sign Up' and follow the directions. Download the viewer, open it and login.
What is important is picking your avatar's name. Apparently you can change it later on, but the previous name (names? No clue) will show up as a legacy name. For me, I chose the name of a Dungeons and Dragon character I'd created some years ago and have always liked - Liadan Mikaella.
You'll also pick your avatar. I forget the number of choices you have, but it's something like ten, all human-shaped. This can be easily changed later, or you can purchase a custom-avatar later on. (If you're inclined towards that, you could create your own, but you'll have to look elsewhere online for tutorials on that.)
They have a short tutorial after creating your avatar in which you learn how to move around SL - walking, turning, using the camera zoom-in and zoom-out features, and flying. After I went through that, I wasn't happy with my avatar's lack of pants and the short shorts, so I fumbled around with my inventory until I found a pair of purple-ish pants. A tutorial for how to change clothes in the inventory would have been nice.
You'll find your inventory on the left-hand side of the viewer. It's the suitcase. When you open it, you'll see three tabs: 'My Inventory' (everything), 'Recent' (generally useless), and 'Worn'. To search through one of them, have the tab you want to look through activated and type what you're looking for in the search bar. Then, to put something on, right-click and click 'wear'.
After the tutorial section, you'll exit it and enter Social Island. There's a handful of games to play to help with fine-tuning moving your avatar. You can earn points playing those games as well, and then use them to purchase some clothes and such. I used mine to purchase some flat jeans shoes.
There are some changing rooms there, but I've never been able to come across them while others aren't in them, unfortunately.
Lastly, there's an area within it which leads to a series of portals. Before you go through any of them, you'll want to bookmark this location. Do so by either accepting the pop-up card or by going to your top bar on the viewer, then World -> Landmark this place. From here, you can go to a large variety of different places. One of them is called Linden Realms - but I'll talk more about that next week.
